In texas holdem, the players show their five-card hands to determine the winner of the game, and the player who has the best hand wins. Take a look at the rank of hands used in texas holdem:
  1. Royal flush – the strongest and highest possible hand in texas holdem; five Royal consecutive cards which belong to the same suit
  2. Straight flush – five cards are in sequence and part of the same suit
  3. Four of a Kind (Quads) – four out of five cards have the same value
  4. Full House – three cards are the same and the two remaining cards are the same
  5. Flush – all cards are part of the same suit
  6. Straight – five consecutive cards but do not belong to the same suit
  7. Three of a Kind – three out of five cards have the same value
  8. Two Pairs – two pairs of cards have the same value
  9. One Pair – two cards have the same value

To have a better understanding of what Texas Holdem is and how it is played, get familiar with these basic terms used when playing this very popular community card game.

  • Flop – refers to the first three community cards on the board
  • Turn – the fourth community card, placed face up
  • River – refers to the fifth and last community card of the game
  • Showdown – all players show their hands to determine the winner; this occurs at the end of the round
  • Community Cards – these are the cards which are shared by all players
  • Hole Cards – the two cards in the hand of a player
  • Fold – to throw your hand
  • Split Pot – refers to the pot that is shared by two or more players
  • Bankroll – money used to play the game
  • Cut – divide the deck into two sections
  • Buy In – the amount of money needed so you can play the game
  • No Limit – in this game, you can bet all your chips on any betting round
